DPD Corrections

Note: these corrections relate to the first edition of DPD that has now been supplanted by the much improved second edition that does not contain these errors!

Corrections to Developmental Phonological Disorders: Foundations of Clinical Practice

Chapter 1: Describing Phonological Knowledge at Multiple Levels of Representation

p. 26 ” The stop [k] is [+ compact] in contrast to the stop [t] which is [- compact] (i.e., diffuse) consonant because it has two prominent energy peaks in the release burst and following aspiration noise (see “d” on Plate 2 marking an area on the spectrogram with energy concentrated at approximately 3300 and 6600 Hz).” This sentence should refer to “e” on Plate 2, indicating the release burst and aspiration noise associated with the [t] in “today”.

p. 29 Margin note: “The category boundary is the point on the identification function at which 50% of responses are assigned to each response category. Category width, the region marking less than 75% certainty about the identity of the stimuli, narrows with age and experience.” This margin note is missing the word “boundary” as in “Category boundary width…”.

p. 63 “In other words, each phoneme from the edge of the word is expected to be…” should read “… each phoneme from the edge of the syllable…”

p. 67 Figure 1-27 shows the feature [grooved] as [+] when it should be [-]; download corrected version DPD Figure 1-27 Corrected.

p. 69 “representations for words such as “pea” and “pies”….” should read “representations for the /p/ in words such as “pea” and “pies”. …”

Chapter 2: Speech Perception Development

p. 90 Learning Objective 2.2.3 “Interpret toddler mispronunciation detection performance as shown in Figure 2-10, in relation to the outcome of the habituation experiments summarized in Table 2-1” should read “Interpret toddler mispronunciation detection performance as shown in Figure 2-6…”

p. 104 Figure 2-5 Caption is backwards, corrections as follows:  “Mismatch responses recorded from German-learning infants in response to trochaic iambic deviant stimuli presented in a stream of iambic trochaic nonsense words (left) and from French-learning infants to iambic trochaic deviant stimuli presented in a stream of trochaic iambic nonsense words (right), in an ERP study involving 4and 5-month-old infants.

p. 111 This sentence should mention intersubject variability as in variability between subjects: “Speech perception performance on these four tasks was shown to improve significantly with age although there was considerable intrasubject intersubject variability at each age level, as shown in Figure 2–7.”

p. 119 “The results, as shown for nonreaders in Figure 2-10…” should read “The results, shown separately for nonreaders and readers in Figure 2-10, …”

p. 220 Figure caption for Figure 2-10, add “Filled bars represent non-readers; open bars represent beginning readers.”

p. 122, Figure 2-11, Milestone at 17 months should read “Fast-mapping of phonetically similar words in switch task.” Rvachew DPD Figure 2-11 Corrected

Chapter 3: Development of Speech Motor Control

p. 169, text: “the area of the acoustic vowel space declines over this period for both males and females. Both of these changes are predicted by reductions in the length of the vocal tract.” should read  “the area of the acoustic vowel space declines over this period for both males and females. Both of these changes are predicted by increases in the length of the vocal tract.”

p. 169 margin note: “Mean F1 and F2 at the center and overall area of the vowel space declines between age 4 years and adulthood, reflecting reductions in the length of the vocal tract.” should read ” Mean F1 and F2 at the center and overall area of the vowel space declines between age 4 years and adulthood, reflecting increases in the length of the vocal tract.”

p. 186 Figure 3-14 caption: “… examine differential learning of gross motor plans (GMPs)” should read “… examine differential learning of generalized motor programs (GMPs)”.

Chapter 4: Phonological Development

p. 263 several examples of words produced by toddlers in Klein (1981)  are reproduced with incorrect phonetic symbols, specifically the symbol for the vowel [ae] as in “hat” is replaced by the left curly bracket { in all the transcriptions on this page.

Introduction to Part II

p. 318, Table II-1, left column, first cell, “Standardized measures of treatment accuracy” should read “Standardized measures of articulation accuracy.”

Chapter 5: Assessment of Children with Developmental Phonological Disorders

Demonstration 5-3 (pp. 354-355): This demonstration should be annotated to indicate that the calculation of MMRtri is specific to the Maximum Performance Task procedure described in Appendix 5-4. The procedure is essentially the same but the measurements need to be modified slightly if the SLP is to use the normative information presented in Appendix 5-3 or Appendix 5-5

Chapter 6: Speech Sample Analysis

Figure 6-8 (p. 437): Quick version of a multilinear analysis. The feature [grvd] on this chart is shown with the wrong sign. It should be [-grvd] (not [+grvd]). The corrected figure is here: Rvachew DPD Figure 6-8 Quick Multilinear An.

Chapter 7: Nature of Developmental Phonological Disorders

p. 540: add apostrophe to ‘parents’ and insert the word ‘of’ into this sentence as follows “The first perceived value was in validation of the parents’ concern which included confirming that parenting practices were not the cause of the child’s problems.”

p. 540: add semi-colon to this sentence as follows: “The fifth benefit of a diagnosis is access to support from other people, especially other parents with similar experiences; as with information and intervention services, support groups are often organized around diagnostic labels.”

Chapter 8: Treatment Planning

Case Study 8-4: Child is aged 5;4 and 6;2 and 7;4 at the prekindergarten, kindergarten and grade 1 assessments (ages in book are currently incorrect).

Chapter 10: Output Oriented Approaches to Intervention

p. 764: The sentence, “Recall from Chapter 8 that one reason for poor development of speech motor control might be deficiencies in somatosensory feedback…” refers to the wrong chapter. This sentence should read “Recall from Chapter 7…”.

p. 784: “The use of the integral stimulus hierarchy…” should be “The use of the integral stimulation hierarchy…”.
